Florida: in Good Shape for 06 Hurricane Season

Certified contractors are the key to recovery

(Orlando, Fla.) - After the 2005 record-setting hurricane season, many Florida homeowners are still working on getting life back to normal. With forecasters predicting nine hurricanes of which five are in categories 3 or higher, now is the time to start making preparations. While residents have learned to stock up on plenty of fresh water and food, another important element to consider is who to call if your home is damaged. This is where Florida certified contractors come in.

When it comes to selecting someone for home repairs it's important to realize there is a world of difference between a "handy man" and a certified contractor. A certified contractor is any contractor who possesses a certificate of competency issued by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation and who is allowed to engage in business as a contractor in any jurisdiction in the State.

"A qualified workforce is critical to Florida's future," said G. W. Harrell, Executive Director Construction Industry Licensing Board, DBPR. "In times of crisis, people tend to look to anyone for help. For that reason, it is especially important for us to strongly encourage Florida residents to always seek out licensed contractors for home repairs."

To find out if a contractor is licensed, you simply visit www.myfloridalicense.com online and click on the link to the right titled Search for a License, Permit, or Registration, or call (850) 487-1395.

Today, with over 104,000 licensed contractors in Florida, homeowners have an army of professionals ready to meet their needs following a hurricane. One company that develops this test is Florida's very own, Professional Testing, Inc.

"Professionals in the construction industry work with us to create exams that are precise and relevant to the needs of this industry," said Cynthia Woodley, Professional Testing, Inc. Vice President. "Certified contractors in Florida have demonstrated a desire to achieve a higher standard of quality."

For three decades, Professional Testing has developed more than 2,500 programs, administered over 1.2 million exams, and maintained licensure and professional certification examination programs for 125 occupations.
